Robin Hood Gala Brings in $60-Million for Antipoverty Groups

New York’s Robin Hood Foundation raised $60-million for poverty-fighting efforts Monday night at its annual gala, the biggest event on the city’s philanthropic social circuit, writes The Wall Street Journal.

The newly launched Robin Hood American Dream Fund, which supports groups helping immigrants and their families, will get $35-million of Monday’s take. The fundraising total fell from the $80.5-million collected at last May’s gala, as reported by Bloomberg at the time.

About 4,000 guests attended the event at the Javits Center, which featured entertainment by comedian John Oliver and singer Bruno Mars and numerous quips from the stage about the wealth of the audience, studded with celebrities and Wall Street moguls. “It’s not that we take from the rich,” newscaster Brian Williams said. “I think we ask you very nicely.”
