The Rockefeller Foundation, in New York, has started a new program to award grants of $50,000 to $250,000 to support work in visual, performing, and media arts, reports The New York Times.

Grants for the $2.5-million New York City Cultural Innovation Fund will be announced late this year.

“Local cultural organizations have traditionally served as the wellspring of that creative identity,” Darren Walker, a vice president at the Rockefeller Foundation, said in a statement released by the foundation. “Support for these cultural institutions can no longer be taken for granted.” He says the fund will “help the city maintain its position as a global leader by ensuring the future vitality of its cultural sector.”
