The philanthropist David Rockefeller plans to sell a valuable painting and give the proceeds to multiple charities, reports the Bloomberg news service.

Mr. Rockefeller will sell a 1950 work by Mark Rothko entitled “White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose).’‘

The work is expected to sell for $40-million or more. Mr. Rockefeller bought the painting in 1960 for $8,500.

Mr. Rockefeller has not named which charities will receive money. He said in a recent interview, “There are many good causes to which that large sum could be put. I certainly expect the proceeds to go to one or more of them.’‘
