Salaries Rise for Top Private-School Headmasters

January 24, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Salaries of private-school leaders are rising fast, The Wall Street Journal found after an analysis of tax filings for 50 private institutions.

Half of the schools increased pay of their headmasters by more than 40 percent over the past five years, the newspaper reports. Ten schools increased pay to their headmasters by more than 60 percent in that time.

Schools said they needed to increase pay because of the growing fund-raising pressures on headmasters.

In addition, they noted that more than 70 percent of current headmasters are expected to retire within the next decade—a time when the population of high-school-age kids is expected to drop. That combination is expected to drive even more competition to win students, the Journal reports.
