Sale of Pope’s Harley Fetches $328,000 for Rome Charity
February 7, 2014
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle formerly owned by Pope Francis fetched about $328,000 from an anonymous bidder at a Paris auction Thursday—almost 20 times its pre-sale estimate—with proceeds going to Catholic charity Caritas, Reuters writes.
The Dyna Super Glide cycle and a Harley-Davidson leather jacket were presented to the pontiff last year by the motorbike maker to mark its 110th anniversary. Francis signed both items and donated them to Caritas.
The charity will use the money to renovate a hostel and soup kitchen based at Rome’s Termini train station.
