Salvation Army Financial Manager Sentenced

November 7, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Leroy Brown, a former financial manager for the Salvation Army, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison on Monday, reports The Star-Ledger.

Mr. Brown, who worked at the charity’s office in Newark, N.J., embezzled $385,760 from the Salvation Army over seven years by writing false names on 585 checks and giving them to a friend to cash. The money was intended to provide housing subsidies for low-income people and AIDS patients.

U.S. District Judge Joseph Greenaway dismissed Mr. Brown’s request for leniency, remarking, “I sort of look at this as akin to stealing from the alms at church. In my mind, that’s what it’s like—taking money from those who need it most.”
