San Diego Opera Trustee Give $1-Million to Seek Switch on Closure

April 7, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

A member of the San Diego Opera board is giving $1-million to the organization in hopes of persuading her peers to reverse their vote last month to shut down the company, U-T San Diego and TV station KNSD report.

In a statement Friday, Carol Lazier said the donation aimed to encourage the board to “rescind the dissolution vote” but is not meant to kick-start fundraising for the opera “as it exists today.” She called on fellow directors to look for alternative ways of doing business to address the opera’s anticipated financial woes.

The board voted last week to delay the planned shutdown from April 14, after the opera’s final performance of the season, to April 29 in order to explore other options. Board President Karen Cohn said the organization needs at least $10-million to put on its 50th-anniversary season in 2014-15.
