S.C. Teacher Donates Unsuspected $8.4-Million Fortune

February 4, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Community Foundation of Greenville, S.C., is disbursing the first grants drawn from a surprise $8.4-million bequest from a retired schoolteacher who died 15 months ago at age 94, The Greenville News reports.

Margaret Southern lived what relatives and acquaintances said was a modest, private life, caring for her ill brother and her pet dachshunds, but she quietly built an inheritance from her late husband into a multimillion-dollar stock portfolio.

Under the terms of her trust, the Greenville Humane Society will get 50 percent of earnings from the bequest, with the rest going to children’s charities selected by the Community Foundation. Initial grants totaling $400,000 are going out this week.
