Second Mile Seeks Court Permission to Sell Pa. Property

The Pennsylvania nonprofit founded by the convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky is seeking a court’s OK to sell land once designated for the youth charity’s headquarters, writes the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The Second Mile filed a petition Tuesday to sell the 60.7-acre parcel in Centre County, Pa., to a private developer for $1.05-million.

Plans for the new headquarters fell apart in the wake of Mr. Sandusky’s November 2011 arrest and subsequent conviction for sexually abusing adolescent boys, many of them participants in the Second Mile’s programs for underprivileged youth. The former Penn State University assistant football coach is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence. If approved by the court, proceeds from the property sale would go toward settlements with Mr. Sandusky’s victims as well as legal fees, insurance, and expenses related to the Second Mile’s planned dissolution.
