Security Glitch Nixes Online Giving for Calif. State Workers

California’s government has dropped a new online mechanism for state employees to make payroll donations to charity because it violated security standards, The Sacramento Bee reports.
The online option for the Our Promise program, tested with some state-government workers last year, went live for all employees last month but was abruptly taken down after IT officials spotted potential avenues for privacy breaches, including a requirement that donors provide Social Security numbers for registration purposes.
The annual autumn charity campaign raised $6.4 million last year for hundreds of California nonprofits. As in past years, state workers can still download and print a pledge form and submit it to officials in their agencies or send it to Our Promise’s Sacramento office.
