Sen. Charles E. Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, is expected this week to seek changes in governance at American University, in Washington, after talks between the Finance Committee and the university’s board members failed, The Washington Post reports. The talks, held over the last several weeks, dealt with the $3.75-million severance package that was given to the institution’s former president, Benjamin A. Ladner, with the board’s approval.
Mr. Ladner was forced out in October after auditors raised questions about possible misuse of university money by Mr. Ladner and his wife, Nancy. Mr. Ladner repaid the university more than $100,000.
Mr. Grassley’s recommendations are expected to include suggestions that leaders of the university’s board dismiss some trustees and take steps to improve participation by faculty and students on its governing panel.
