Sesame Workshop Appoints New CEO

Sesame Workshop

Sherrie Westin has been promoted from president to CEO of the children’s media nonprofit. She is its first woman leader since co-founder Joan Ganz Cooney stepped down from the helm in 1990.

Westin started working there in 1998 and has been interim CEO since February.


Blue Shield of California

Lois Quam, CEO of Pathfinder International, will become president of the nonprofit health-care system in August.

In addition, Susan Mullaney will start next month as executive vice president of strategic initiatives. A senior adviser at Boston Consulting Group, she was previously president of Kaiser Permanente Washington until 2022.

League of Women Voters of the United States

Celina Stewart has been promoted to CEO, effective August 5. She has served as its chief counsel and senior director of advocacy and litigation since 2018.

Stewart follows Virginia Kase Solomón, who departed in February to become president and CEO of Common Cause.

Trevor Project

Jaymes Black, president and CEO at Family Equality, has been hired as CEO of this organization that offers mental-health services for young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning. They are the group’s first Black and nonbinary CEO.

Black succeeds Peggy Rajski, a co-founder of the organization and a member of its board who has served as its interim CEO since 2022.

More New CEOs

Gary Clemons, executive director of Friends of the Children, has been named executive director of the nonprofit newsroom City Limits.

DeVone Holt, chief external-affairs officer at Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, has been appointed president and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center.

Amir Kirkwood is the new CEO of the Justice Climate Fund. Previously he was president and CEO of Locus, a community development financial institution.

Camila Rocha will be the first Hispanic woman to serve as president and CEO of Easterseals South Florida. She joined the social-services group for people with disabilities in 2010 and was most recently its chief program officer.

Tabinda Sarosh has stepped up as Pathfinder International’s interim CEO, based in Pakistan. She has worked there since 2016 and was most recently president of the humanitarian group’s work in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Baltimore Museum of Art

The museum has appointed three new leaders.

Elisabeth Callihan will start as chief education officer on September 9. Currently she is director of education at the Mississippi Museum of Art and director of learning and practice for the museum’s Center of Art and Public Exchange.

Anna Lincoln Whitehurst, director of development at the Irvine Nature Center, has been appointed senior director of advancement.

Angela Wheeler is now chief of external affairs. Most recently she was associate vice president of campaign operations at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Nicki Anderson, director of Benedictine University’s LEADS Women’s Undergraduate Leadership Program, has joined the DuPage Foundation as its director of strategic partnerships.

Jeannette Brown, director and chief of staff at the California Community Choice Association, is now director of public policy at the California Association of Nonprofits.

Sajit Joseph, chief innovation officer at the American Red Cross, has been appointed chief digital and transformation officer at Tides. In addition, Liz Landon has joined the social-justice organization as chief people officer. Most recently she was chief people Officer and a board member at Fishawack Health.

Stephanie Langlais, former associate director at the Arthritis Foundation Florida, has been hired as director of philanthropy at the YMCA of the Palm Beaches.

Rebecca Noricks, a communications officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, has been named vice president of communications at the Dogwood Health Trust.

Janna Spock, senior director of patron and institutional giving at the Metropolitan Opera, has been appointed vice president and chief development officer at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Departure

Vince Stehle is stepping down after 12 years as executive director of Media Impact Funders. Earlier in his career, he spent a decade as a reporter for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and remains a contributor today.

Legacy

Maxine Frank Singer, a molecular biologist who was the first woman to serve as president of Carnegie Science, died on July 9 at age 93. She led the scientific-research group from 1988 until her retirement in 2002, after which she continued to partner with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the Simons Foundation’s program Math for America to expand access to scientific education for young people. She won the National Medal of Science in 1992 for her contributions to scientific research and public advocacy.
