Sexual Harassment of Female Interns Is Widespread, Study Finds

June 28, 2018 | Read Time: 1 minute

Title: Rise Up: Interns, Their Workplace Rights, and the Tools to End Sexual Harassment

Organization: B.A. Rudolph Foundation

Summary: More than 80 percent of women who have worked as interns know someone who has been sexually harassed as an intern — and half of them were harassed themselves as interns, according to the study. Interns, especially those who are unpaid, may not have the same rights as other employees, and many reported they were unaware of their workplace rights.

The 57 respondents to the survey were former recipients of B.A. Rudolph Foundation Public Service Scholarships, which support internships, primarily in the Washington D.C. area, for people who identify as women.

About half of the women surveyed now work at nonprofits.

An April poll by the Chronicle and the Association of Fundraising Professionals found that about one in four women fundraisers has experienced sexual harassment in their careers.
