Katya Andresen believes some simple changes to their Web sites can help the vast majority of nonprofit groups improve raise more money.

Ms. Andresen, vice president of marketing at Network for Good in Bethesda, Md., writes on Katya’s Non-Profit Marketing Blog that charities need to do a much better job of making “donate’ buttons on their Web sites easier to find.

Charities should also do a better job of creatively framing their donate buttons by creating content that appeals to the interests of their donors. She urges nonprofit groups to make the experience more “fun, touching, or compelling” and points to The Carbon Fund as a charity that effectively frames its donate button. Along with the instruction to contribute now, a phrase says: “Do a world of good. Offset your carbon footprint today

Ms. Andresen also encourages charities to think about ways to get their online donors to contribute immediately — rather than waiting until the end of the year.

She points to Malaria No More, which shows visitors why their donations matter right now.
