Singer and Nobel Laureate Establish Foundation
December 14, 2006
The singer Shakira and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, both from Colombia, have started a foundation to combat child poverty, reports the Associated Press.
The foundation, named Latin America in Solidarity Action, aims to alleviate poverty, which kills 350,000 children annually in the region. Programs include health care and nutritional aid to pregnant women and children under the age of two, and school enrollment for abused and homeless children.
Five concerts are in the works next year to raise money for the organization.
