Slain British Lawmaker Had Charity Career

Jo Cox, the member of Parliament murdered Thursday in northern England, was a veteran of the nonprofit world who did stints at at Oxfam, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and anti-slavery charity the Freedom Fund, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The 41-year-old Labour Party lawmaker was elected to Parliament last year, representing a constituency in the Yorkshire region, where she was killed. In office she pushed for greater international action to help refugees fleeing Syria’s civil war, and she was a proponent of the Uinted Kingdom staying in the European Union, a hotly debated topic on which the country will vote in a referendum next week.

British authorities have arrested a suspect in the gun-and-knife attack whom the Southern Poverty Law Center, a U.S. nonprofit that tracks extremist groups, said had ties to neo-Nazi organizations, the Journal also reported.
