Nonprofit groups in Northern California are increasing their workers’ pay, but the gains are modest and fewer groups expect to add workers than last year, according to a new report.
The study of 402 nonprofit organizations, which examined data for more than 21,000 jobs, found that 66 percent of groups were increasing their salary budgets, up from 60 percent in 2011. The median overall increase in employee pay was 2 percent, the same as last year.
Among the report’s other key findings:
• The share of groups that expect to add workers in the coming year has declined for the past three years: About 29 percent of groups predicted they will expand their work force in 2012, compared with 39 percent in 2011 and 41 percent in 2010.
• Median pay for nonprofit CEO’s in Northern California was $119,995.
• The median base salary for CEO’s in San Francisco was $140,005.
• Leaders of the largest nonprofits among those surveyed, those with budgets of $15-million or more, made a median of $173,714. Executives who headed the smallest groups, with budgets of less than $500,000, made a median of $78,427.
“Fair Pay for Northern California Nonprofits” is available on the Nonprofit Compensation Associates Web site on a sliding scale of $60 to $180 for groups that participated in the survey, on a sliding scale of $165 to $495 for nonprofits that did not participate, and $750 for others.
