Lawrence M. Small resigned today as head of the Smithsonian Institution, after coming under scrutiny from lawmakers who expressed concern that he was using the institution’s money to pay for personal expenses, The Washington Post reports.
Cristian Samper, head of the National Museum of Natural History, was named the acting head of the organization.
Mr. Small submitted his resignation on Sunday, and the institution’s board accepted it, the newspaper said. The resignation took effect immediately.
The Smithsonian has denied any wrongdoing but last week approved two committees to examine management operations at the institution, the newspaper noted.
