Smithsonian Fills Inspector-General Job

March 7, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A. Sprightly Ryan, the acting inspector general of the Smithsonian Institution, has been appointed to fill that job on a permanent basis, reports The Washington Post.

The Post recently reported on a confidential report issued by Ms. Ryan that noted unauthorized spending by the institution’s top executive, Lawrence M. Small. That report found $90,000 in expenses not authorized by the Board of Regents, including a trip to Cambodia for Mr. Small’s wife, catered dinners for staff members, and expensive gifts for donors and employees.

Ms. Ryan is currently reviewing the expenses of the Smithsonian Business Ventures and other compensation paid by the organization, and would not comment on the report about Mr. Small.
