Smithsonian Issues Systemwide Ban on Selfie Sticks

The Smithsonian has prohibited visitors from using photo-facilitating selfie sticks at all of its museums, writes The Washington Post. The poles that allow users to hold cameras at a distance and take better self-portraits are now included in a policy posted on the Smithsonian’s website that also bars tripods and monopods.

Several major museums across the country, including some individual members of the Smithsonian system, had already disallowed selfie sticks, saying the devices pose risks to visitors and exhibits. While the Smithsonian continues to encourage attendees to take and share selfies, banning the sticks “is a preventive measure to protect visitors and objects, especially during crowded conditions,” according to its website.
