Nearly any nonprofit-management book contains a section on employment contracts, but some volumes focus exclusively on the subject — look for those in the business-law section of bookstores and libraries. Other resources include:

  • The American Society of Association Executives’ Web site offers a model employment agreement for an executive director. The form was composed by Jerald Jacobs, the group’s general counsel.
  • “Chief Executive Compensation: A Guide for Nonprofit Boards” can offer guidance in determining salaries. The report was last updated in 1999 and is available from BoardSource through its online bookstore or by calling (202) 452-6262. The booklet costs $12 for BoardSource members, $16 for nonmembers.
  • Free information on a variety of nonprofit management topics, including compensation, is available online from Authenticity Consulting, in Minneapolis, which offers management-consulting services to for-profit and nonprofit clients.
  • Data on current nonprofit-salary standards can be obtained from a variety of sources. The Chronicle publishes its own annual salary survey, and most state associations of nonprofit organizations publish their own annual data. Although its survey covers a variety of nonprofit organizations in addition to charities, the latest “Association Executive Compensation & Benefits Study,” published by the American Society of Association Executives, may also prove helpful. It can be obtained for $143.95 online via the association’s Web site or by calling (202) 626-2748.

In addition, recent articles about nonprofit-salary surveys can be found in the Job Market Library section of Philanthropy Careers. Last year, the site’s advice column, Hotline, rounded up a number of Web sites that offer current salary data, including information about nonprofit positions.
