T. Denny Sanford, a South Dakota banker, gave $70-million on Monday for improvements to the Homestake Gold Mine so that it can be used for science research and an education center, reports The Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan.
Mr. Sanford said he hopes the gift to the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority will help the state receive a National Science Foundation designation for an underground physics laboratory. A decision on that designation is expected later this year.
Mr. Sanford ranked 14th on The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual survey of America’s biggest donors last year. (A subscription is required to view the Chronicle article.)
