Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations: a Sampling

Care Wisconsin First (Madison)

The health and long-term-care organization plans to cut approximately 77 jobs, about 14 percent of its work force, in its home-care-services department beginning in December.

Claremont Museum of Art (Calif.)

The museum has laid off its five employees and plans to shut its doors. It will retain its education program and maintain its collection in the hope that it will reopen in the future.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra (Denver)

The orchestra’s musicians have accepted a 12.5-percent salary reduction and up to four weeks of unpaid leave. The orchestra has also suspended contributions to employees’ retirement fund.

Epilepsy Foundation of South Carolina (Columbia)

The organization will close at the end of the month.

Foundation Center (New York)

The nonprofit service and research organization has reduced its staff by 12 percent through layoffs and voluntary retirements.

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

The symphony’s musicians have agreed to a 12-percent salary reduction, and its president has taken a 15-percent pay cut. Vice presidents are taking a 10-percent salary reduction, and pay for the remainder of the administrative staff will be cut by 5 percent.

Omaha Theater Ballet and School

The group plans to shut down in February.

Salvation Army Greater New York Division (New York)

The charity is laying off 120 employees in the organization’s foster boarding home and preventive care program. (This updates a previous report published in the July 23 issue.)

Wallace Foundation (New York)

The grant maker plans to eliminate 15 staff positions.
