Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations: a Sampling

BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The orchestra is laying off 10 administrative employees.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF METRO ATLANTA
The youth organization has reduced its staff by 12 percent and is reducing the number of programs it offers.
PORTLAND ART MUSEUM (OREGON)
The museum is laying off five employees and reducing the salaries of employees who make more than $100,000 by 5 to 6 percent. All other employees will take weeklong furloughs in 2010, and the museum will leave unfilled two vacant curatorial positions. Contributions to employee retirement plans will be suspended.
SALVATION ARMY GREATER NEW YORK DIVISION
The New York branch of the charity is closing its adolescent-housing program, which sheltered young people who could not find foster homes or were awaiting trial, and is laying off 98 employees who worked on the program.
SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY (WASHINGTON)
All employees of the theater group will take furloughs this summer.
WORLD VISION (FEDERAL WAY, WASH.)
The international Christian aid organization has laid off approximately 50 employees, about 5 percent of its work force in the United States, and has eliminated 25 vacant positions. The group is reducing contributions to employee retirement plans by 50 percent, canceling raises, and increasing the amount employees pay for health-care benefits.
