Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations: a Sampling

The orchestra’s musicians have agreed to a 12.5 percent pay cut for the 2009-10 season (this updates a report in our May 21 issue).

The human-services group is laying off 40 employees and eliminating a program that helps disabled people make the transition from welfare to work.

The 115-year-old human-services group is closing.

The orchestra’s music director, principal pops conductor, and associate conductor have agreed to an 8-to-10 percent reduction in their salaries; its musicians will take two unpaid weeks off, and its staff members will take a one-week furlough.

The orchestra’s musicians have agreed to a wage-increase freeze for this year and reduced raises in the 2011-12 season. The orchestra also plans to leave unfilled about six vacant musician posts and is reducing pension contributions to 5 percent from 7 percent. Earlier this year, the orchestra eliminated four full-time staff positions, reduced the number of part-time staff members, imposed wage freezes for all staff members, and reduced contributions to staff retirement plans. In addition, its music director and president voluntarily reduced their salaries by 10 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

The museum has laid off eight employees, and six staff members of Art (Providence) have accepted early-retirement offers. In addition, the museum will close for the month of August.

The organization is closing a YMCA branch in South Toledo.
