Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations

American Conservatory Theater (San Francisco)

The theater has cut three jobs and left vacant posts unfilled. It has frozen pay raises, and has cut one production.

Ballet West (Salt Lake City)

The ballet company has announced it will eliminate four positions, freeze salaries, reduce pension contributions, and request furloughs for its administrative staff. The company also plans to seek concessions from three unions that represent its dancers, stagehands, and musicians.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra’s musicians have agreed to forgo wage and pension hikes in their 2009-10 contract, amounting to an 8-percent pay cut.

Boston Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra has eliminated a planned 2010 European tour.

Brooklyn Philharmonic (N.Y.)

The orchestra has canceled the remainder of its current season and its entire 2009-10 season.

Foothills Theatre (Worcester, Mass.)

The theater is ceasing operations later this month.

Ford Foundation (New York)

The foundation is closing its offices in Russia and Vietnam, which will eliminate 30 staff positions.

Orlando Ballet

The dance company has cut one set of performances, and its dancers will lose three weeks of pay.

San Francisco Ballet

The dance company has cut five administrative positions, senior executives volunteered to take a 10-percent salary reduction, and it has eliminated contributions to retirement plans of nonunion employees. The company is putting on hold a new production it had planned for next fiscal year.

Stanford U. (Calif.)

The university’s development office has laid off 20 percent of its staff.
