Stanford University, in California, recently received two large gifts from alumni: $50-million from Helen and Peter Bing, and $30-million from Jay A. Precourt.
The Bings’ gift of $50-million will build a new 900-seat concert hall at Stanford, part of the university’s plan for a performing-arts center and its Arts Initiative, which aims to integrate the arts into classrooms and curricula.
Peter Bing is a 1955 Stanford graduate, physician, and Southern California developer, according to the Mercury News, in San Jose. He also serves on Stanford’s board of trustees.
Mr. Precourt, chief executive officer of Hermes Consolidated Inc., an oil company, gave $30-million to establish the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency, which will “emphasize research, decision-making, and policy in the discovery and adoption of energy-efficient technologies, systems and practices,” says the university.
Mr. Precourt earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in petroleum engineering from Stanford.
