State Senator Takes Helm at Blue Cross Foundation

May 23, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A Massachusetts state senator and advocate for gay and immigrant rights will resign his legislative seat to lead the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, reports The Boston Globe.

Jarrett T. Barrios, a Democrat and Cuban immigrant who is married to a same-sex partner, said he views running the $102-million foundation as an extension of his political work. His main concern will be expanding access to health insurance.

His departure surprised some Democrats, who viewed him as a young dynamo with a long political future ahead. However, with few political offices available in his home state, other people said Mr. Barrios, 38, probably felt he had few viable political options.

Mr. Barrios replaces Nancy Turnbull, who left the foundation for a post as a dean at Harvard University’s School of Public Health.
