Stavros Niarchos Foundation Gives $23 Million to Promote Greek Opera: Grants Roundup

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Stavros Niarchos Foundation

$22.9 million to the Greek National Opera to enhance the organization’s artistic outreach and promote its work abroad.

Starr Foundation

$10 million to the Office of Strategic Services Society to help build the National Museum of Intelligence and Special Operations, which is under development in Ashburn, Va.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$7.2 million to Texas Tech University’s College of Education to expand a center that leads teacher-preparation programs nationwide.

JPMorgan Chase

$6 million to New Skills for Youth, which will create and strengthen career-path programs for young people in the Washington area through a collaboration with public schools in Baltimore, D.C., Fairfax County (in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College), Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County.


Headwaters Foundation

$5.2 million to the University of Montana to establish a program office for Zero to Five, a multiyear program that will offer health and family support services that benefit young children in Montana.

HollyFrontier

$5 million to Gathering Place to plant trees and make other improvements to this park along the west banks of the Arkansas River.

Lilly Endowment

$5 million to Duke University to renovate and expand the Lilly Library.

Kern Family Foundation

$3.2 million to North Central College to establish the Character Education Institute and train principals and teachers who place an emphasis on ethics, values, and character in their schools.

Boeing Company

$2 million to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum to sponsor its programs marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 space mission to the moon.


Brown-Forman

$2 million to the YMCA of Greater Louisville to build a new facility. Brown-Forman is a Kentucky-based manufacturer of alcohol and wine, with brands that include Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, and Chambord.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

$1.7 million to the University of California at Davis to establish the Heather M. Young Fellowship Program, which will support gerontological nursing and care for older adults through the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

Edward H. Benenson Foundation

$1 million to the Palm Beach Opera to continue its program to offer professional training for emerging young singers.

Thomas R. Brown Foundations

$1 million to the University of Arizona to establish micro-campuses in Peru and Mauritius, including course development, faculty training, and renovations.

New Grant Opportunities

The American Psychological Foundation is accepting proposals for funding from the Esther Katz Rosen Precollege Psychology Grant Program. Eligible applicants include high schools and nonprofit organizations that prepare high-school students, particularly those in gifted and talented programs, for advanced studies and careers in psychology. Grants are worth up to $15,000 each. Applications are due March 1.


The Keeling Curve Prize is accepting nominations from individuals and organizations focused on carbon capture and use; energy access; the financial, social, and cultural effects of climate change; and transportation. Up to 10 prizes of $25,000 will be awarded to support projects in the beginning stages of development. Applications will be accepted until February 1 or until 300 applications have been received, whichever comes first.
