Stem-Cell Program Awards Its First Grants
April 11, 2006
The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the state’s program to study embryonic stem cells, awarded its first grants, totaling $12.1-million, on Monday to 16 California nonprofit research institutions, the Los Angeles Times reports. Grant recipients include the Salk Institute of Biological Studies, Stanford University, and several University of California campuses.
Calfiornia voters approved $3-billion worth of bonds for the program in 2004, but the program had been delayed by lawsuits filed by opponents of embryonic stem-cell research. Private investors and donors have helped pay for the grants while the lawsuits are pending.
