Students Volunteering in Droves

In the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina, record numbers of college graduates are applying to AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps, and other programs that allow them to serve others, reports USA Today.
Young people more often want to channel their activism into helping other people through service than by engaging in politics, says Nancy Crocker, director of Academic Community Engagement Services at Arizona State University.
Veterans of service work may also have an advantage in the job hunt, says Sharon Melville, of Career Development Services, in Rochester, N.Y. Employers often view people who have done such work as motivated and resourceful, she says.
