A survey of data on nearly 20,000 employees of 200 nonprofit organizations in Western Pennsylvania has found that women in executive positions earn 36 percent less, on average, than their male counterparts, reports The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The study, conducted by Robert Morris University’s Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management and the United Way of Allegheny County, was designed to help charity managers set salaries, the newspaper reports.
One reason for the discrepancy in male and female executive pay levels may be that many women work in smaller organizations, says Peggy Morrison Outon, executive director of the Bayer Center.
The average male executive director in Western Pennsylvania earns about $117,000, while his average female counterpart earns about $75,000, the study found.
