Suspended Head of British Land-Mine Charity Resigns

October 27, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The chief executive officer of the Halo Trust, a U.K.-based land-mine-clearance charity made famous by Princess Diana, has left the organization amid controversy over its payment of his children’s tuition at elite boarding schools, The Telegraph writes. Guy Willoughby received a severance package in excess of $160,000, according to the British daily.

The charity’s trustees suspended Mr. Willoughby in July in an apparent falling-out over the school-fee payments, which had been approved by a previous board. The Halo Trust, founded by Mr. Willoughby in 1988, rose to international prominence nine years later when the Princess of Wales visited minefields the charity was clearing in Angola. Prince Harry, Diana’s younger son, has served as a patron of the organization.
