The Paper Chase: Nonprofit Filings, Forms, and Record-Keeping: Sixth Edition provides an overview of the legal and tax documents that are required for charities in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The guide, published by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington and Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, explains that nonprofit organizations must keep copies of all documents pertaining to their incorporation and tax-exempt status on file and up-to-date. It also covers rules about lobbying, postal rates and requirements, and employment policies. The booklet includes a schedule for filing state and federal forms, instructions on where to send them, and suggestions on managing accounting, payroll, and other documents.
