February 24, 2000 | Read Time: 1 minute

* The House Ways and Means Committee is seeking reactions to the recent recommendations of the Joint Committee on Taxation that the I.R.S. be allowed to greatly expand the amount of financial and other information it releases to the public about non-profit organizations (The Chronicle, February 10). For more information, go to the Ways and Means Committee’s Web site, http://www.house.gov/ways_means/fullcomm/106cong/fc-18.htm. The deadline for submitting comments is March 15.

* The I.R.S. has published a revised version of its handbook “Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization.” Among the topics: the detailed steps that charities, foundations, and other tax-exempt organizations must take to obtain tax exemptions (and what happens if the government turns them down), and the annual requirements for filing tax returns. The booklet, Publication 557, may be found on the revenue service’s Web site, http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/forms_pubs/pubs.html.
