A frugal elementary school teacher in Toronto has left what is believed to be the largest donation by an individual to an environmental cause in Canada, reports The Globe and Mail, in Toronto.
Roberta Langtry, who never married and had no children but who invested in IBM in the 1940s or 1950s, along with bonds and other stocks, left a $3.8-million bequest to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Ms. Langtry died last year at age 89.
Ms. Langtry was generous to charitable causes throughout her life, giving $4,500 to $9,000 annually for the past 18 years, while even her closest friends were unaware of her wealth, the paper reports.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada plans to buy more wetlands and preserve a rural area north of Toronto. The previous largest gift to the organization was $896,000.
