Tenn. and Conn. Investigate Sandy Hook Charity’s Missing Funds

January 22, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Law-enforcement officials in two states are looking into a runners’ organization that raised $103,000 for people affected by the December 2012 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., but has turned over only $30,000, the Associated Press reports.

Tennessee Attorney General Robert Cooper Jr.’s office confirmed Tuesday that it is investigating the Nashville-based 26.4.26 Foundation, and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said he has offered to assist the inquiry. U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate as well.

The foundation staged marathons in which participants dedicated each mile they ran to one of the 26 children and educators killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Co-founder Ryan Graney told the AP last week that more than $70,000 the charity raised was unaccounted for and that the other founder, Robbie Bruce, cut off contact with her after she questioned him about the organization’s finances.
