Tennessee Baptists Sue Affiliated University

October 4, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A dispute over the control of a Baptist university in Nashville has resulted in a lawsuit by the Tennessee Baptist Convention against Belmont University, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The convention is suing Belmont to demand the return of $58-million it gave to the university over 54 years. The donations stipulated that the convention retain control over the university’s board-selection process, which the Belmont board voted to amend last year, The Chronicle reports.

The convention earlier this year rejected an offer by Belmont to pay it $5-million to dissolve ties between the two entities, the paper reports.
