TEXAS CHARITY LEADER QUITS

March 10, 2006

Robert E. Jones, president of the National Center for the Employment of the Disabled, in El Paso, Tex., resigned this week after newspaper and government reports criticized the organization for failing to comply with federal rules, reports The Oregonian. The charity, which produces chemical-protective suits, received $276-million in 2005 from the federal government under the Javits-Wagner-O’Day jobs program, which requires that severely disabled workers make up 75 percent of the labor at participating groups. According to the reports, 8 percent of the National Center for the Employment of the Disabled’s work force were disabled people.
