Texas Charity Worker Accused of Theft

August 15, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A former employee of the Starfish Foundation,
in Carrollton, Tex., has been arrested and released on bail
on charges of debit-card abuse and theft of $1,500
to $20,000, reports The Dallas Morning News.

Belita Nelson, founder of the organization, accused a former business manager, Ericka Mast, of causing the organization’s shutdown in June through her alleged misconduct. The nonprofit group supports charities that help people kick alcohol and drug addictions.

Starfish stopped accepting donations after the theft was discovered and owes $50,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.

Ms. Mast, who refused comment on the charges, is scheduled to appear in court today.
