Textbook Offers Comprehensive Look at the Nonprofit Field

Nonprofit Organizations: Theory, Management, Policy
by Helmut K. Anheier

As a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University, the London School of Economics, and the University of California at Los Angeles, Helmut K. Anheier says, he found that students and professors were frustrated by the lack of a textbook on nonprofit groups and philanthropy. This book is Mr. Anheier’s attempt to fill that gap and to provide a general overview of current knowledge in the nonprofit field.

His book discusses the history of charities and their relationship to government, both in the United States and in other countries. He describes the types of organizations that make up the nonprofit world and presents data on the size, composition, sources of revenue, and role of U.S. charities.

Mr. Anheier’s book then surveys the different theoretical approaches to studying nonprofit groups, and delves into the management of charities. He provides information on the challenges and concerns facing nonprofit leaders, such as raising and managing resources and increasing the accountability of their organizations. His book concludes with an investigation of how globalization and other public-policy issues will affect charities today and in the future.
