The Future of Volunteerism
July 21, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute
Emerging Areas of Volunteering, edited by Jeffrey L. Brudney, explores how volunteering opportunities have changed over the past few decades. Scholars of public affairs and related fields discuss trends such as the rise of the “episodic volunteer,” who provides short-term assistance, and the growing number of people who travel overseas to lend their services. Other essays describe the ways that technology is starting to reshape how people give their time; the differences between volunteers who provide administrative and other help and those who serve as trustees; and government programs that encourage volunteering. The book, the second in a series by the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action, received financial support from the UPS Foundation.
