The Times Favor Fund Raising, Author Says

Successful Fundraising, Second Edition: a Complete Handbook for Volunteers and Professionals
By Joan Flanagan

Ms. Flanagan, a consultant in Chicago, maintains that the atmosphere for fund raising has never been better, thanks to contemporary forms of information technology.

She offers a guide to soliciting that provides examples of successful Internet appeals, such as those on the World Wildlife Fund Canada’s Web site (http://www.wwf.ca). She praises the group for giving prospective donors several options when contributing on line.

The bulk of Ms. Flanagan’s book examines more-traditional fund-raising methods. Chapters cover special events, direct mailings, prospect research, major gifts, planned gifts, corporate and foundation grants, and partnerships with businesses.

She provides a guide to books and publications of interest to fund raisers, and offers tools such as a worksheet that individuals can use to plot fund-raising efforts.
