The Value of an Hour of Volunteering Rises to $23.56

Summary: In 2015, the estimated value of one hour donated to a nonprofit by a volunteer increased 49 cents to an average of $23.56, according to an annual calculation from the nonprofit membership association. In 2014, the value of a volunteer hour was $23.07, while in 2013 it was $22.55. The figures are based on hourly earnings data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Among the findings:

  • The District of Columbia had the highest-value volunteer hour at $38.77. It was followed by Massachusetts, at $29, and Washington State, at $28.99.
  • A volunteer hour was worth the least in Arkansas, at $19.14, Mississippi, at $19.51, New Mexico, at $19.91. .
  • In 2014, 62.8 million Americans contributed 7.9 billion hours of service, worth $184 billion, according to Corporation for National and Community Service.
