Self-Help Accounting: a Guide for the Volunteer Treasurer, by John Paul Dalsimer, is designed to assist board members who oversee a charity’s finances. Mr. Dalsimer, founder of Community Accountants, a public-interest accounting group in Philadelphia, begins by describing the responsibilities of treasurers, which include overseeing financial transactions, monitoring budgets, and preparing financial-reporting forms. The book, a revised version of a 1989 text, also describes how to open and keep track of bank accounts, and discusses government reporting requirements and the use of auditors and outside accountants. It includes sample balance sheets, informational tax forms, and other documents.
