Tips for Nonprofit Groups Seeking To Expand Globally

Going Global for the Greater Good: Succeeding as a Nonprofit in the International Community
by Bonnie L. Koenig

By working abroad, American nonprofit groups can expand the reach of their programs, increase the diversity of their membership and staffs, and learn from the experiences and perspectives of organizations that do similar work, writes Bonnie L. Koenig, a consultant who helps nonprofit managers develop international programs. Yet how do nonprofit leaders know if “going global” is right for their organizations? And how does a charity begin to move into the international arena?

The author seeks to answer these and other questions in her guidebook for nonprofit managers.

Ms. Koenig provides advice on evaluating whether an organization’s mission can benefit from international involvement and shows groups how to integrate global perspectives into strategic planning. She discusses how to use an organization’s annual conference to explore international themes, as well as how to collaborate with groups overseas and develop ideas for global programs. The book also covers how an organization can improve its ability to communicate with people in different cultures, time zones, and languages.

By describing examples of nonprofit groups that have successfully expanded their operations across national borders, Ms. Koenig seeks to demonstrate that “going global” can be less complicated and expensive than many organizations realize.
