Toronto Museum Leader to Take Reins at Boston’s MFA

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston announced Thursday that it has appointed Matthew Teitelbaum, head of the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, as its new director, The Boston Globe reports. Mr. Teitelbaum will take office in August as Malcolm Rogers ends a 20-plus-year stint shepherding the Boston institution, commonly called the MFA.

Mr. Teitelbaum, who worked at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art in the 1990s, is an expert in contemporary and modern art who earned a reputation for fundraising success and innovative audience engagement in 22 years with the Toronto museum, where he served as chief curator before becoming director in 1998. Attendance rose significantly during his tenure, which saw a major Frank Gehry-designed expansion and renovation. He will be the 11th director in the Boston museum’s 145-year history.
