September 29, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute

Nonprofit Law Made Easy
by Bruce R. Hopkins

This book is designed to help aspiring nonprofit founders, directors of established nonprofit organizations, and other people in philanthropy understand and comply with nonprofit law.

Bruce R. Hopkins, a lawyer in Kansas City, Mo., and the author of 15 books, explains the regulations, laws, and court decisions that affect how nonprofit groups operate. Mr. Hopkins gives readers the basics: advice on applying for nonprofit status, avoiding legal issues involved with lobbying activities, and raising money in a legal manner. Other chapters discuss disclosure and reporting requirements, governance principles and liability, unrelated business activities, joint ventures, the difference between foundations and charities, and many other topics.

The book also includes insights on the future of nonprofit law, including Congressional plans to enact major charity legislation, ambitious new regulations by the Internal Revenue Service, and potential court contributions to nonprofit law.
