Residents of Indonesia’s Aceh province, the region hardest hit by the tsunami in December 2004, are seeking a “divorce” from the international aid group Oxfam because it has lagged on promises to build 127,000 new houses, reports the Agence France-Presse.
Frustrated tsunami survivors, who are living in tents and huts, say they will reject any aid from the charity and will instead seek other sources for permanent shelters.
A spokesman for Oxfam said that the process of buying land for development is more complicated than the residents may realize.
The organization has issued an apology to the people of Aceh, and its British headquarters will conduct an investigation into its slow rate of progress.
