The Tech Museum of Innovation, in San Jose, Calif., honored two nonprofit organizations with its annual awards recognizing creative use of technology to benefit societies around the world.
The nonprofit winners, which each received $50,000:
-
The Centre for Development of Disadvantaged People, in Tamil Nadu, India, which created technology for groups of women to produce potable drinking water to use for their families and sell locally at a profit. Beyond an initial investment in a water-filtering unit, processing the water costs $1 per 225 liters, much less than the $75 it costs to have the same amount of water processed commercially.
-
Internet Archive, in San Francisco, an online database that seeks to provide permanent access to a digital collection of information to anyone with an Internet connection. The organization relies on its high-density storage, technology it developed.
